Hitachi EX 60 Excavator Making a Small Gravel Parking Lot 690261 Hitachi EX 60 Excavator Making a Small Gravel Parking Lot 690261
YouTube converted version. They both look about the same to me. Using a Hitachi EX 60 excavator to construct a rough angle parking lot at a road side This is the same basic video as the other one I uploaded, entitled 'EX 60', but about a minute and a half shorter. I uploaded it to experiment with resolution settings. This one was created at 320x240, while the other one was done at 640x480. I wanted to see how much of a difference it would make in the YouTube converted version. They both look about the same to me. Using a Hitachi EX 60 excavator to construct a rough angle parking lot at a road side in front of a building supply company in Vancouver, Canada. NOTE: Sorry about the rough pixels. Honestly, it looked much better before I uploaded it. I guess a lot of the resolution was lost when the YouTube site converted it. I am a rather pleased with the way this vid turned out; actually, this is my first 'head cam' video that I can honestly say turned out pretty much as I had hoped. I was having a bit of a rough go of it, what with trying to get the camera up and down angle just right, as you probably can tell from watching some of my other 'at work' type videos. I tried tilting my hard hat to a much more forward angle this time, and pretty much hit the target bang on. What you see in this video is pretty much what I see when operating the excavator, but with a markedly narrower field of view, obviously. The camera still cannot follow my eyes' movement, just the movement of my head. One thing that I found interesting: When I watched this video full-screen before uploading it to this site, it occurred to me that what I saw on screen was pretty much the perspective that I saw when sitting in the cab, distancewise, in other words, the size of the objects on screen was pretty much the same as what I saw through my own eyes when in the machine, which I think is a plus. The down side is that the video gets a bit shaky at times, due to the bouncing and shaking of the machine. I left it in, rather than trying to stabilize it, as I would have had to give up too much of the image, and at some points, you would not have been able to see important aspects of this video, like the dozer blade, for example, as they would have been removed from the edge of the picture. I would ask two things of you: Please RATE this video, and PLEASE COMMENT on it. I'll be grateful if you would do that for me - be they favorable or unfavorable comments. I'm also open to your suggestions for future videos. I do not currently have access to a cat or backhoe, sorry (used to have, but that doesn't help now). But I will be doing a few more later on with an EX 200 (hopefully on a commercial demolition job somewhere) and a dump truck. Well, maybe not the dump truck, but we'll see. On another note, I'm looking for someone who would be willing to ride shotgun in a garbage truck (front loader, so no picking up garbage bags, just picking up cans with the forks) with me on one Saturday, to do camera work. There are a few different angles, etc, that I want to play with (eg: getting some overhead shots of the packer blade doing its thing, which I can't do solo, as I need someone in the cab to push the button for the blade; getting a side shot of the rear door opening and the blade pushing the garbage out, etc), and try to put together a better garbage truck video or three, than the ones I've been able to do so far. You'd have to pack your own lunch, and the only pay would be the pure, unadulterated joy of riding in a garbage truck (quite a glamorous thing, really ;p) . But if you're into that, and live in the greater Vancouver area, let me know. I usually start at about 3 am, as it's a 12 -13 hour shift, and I like to get it done before the transfer station closes. The shop is on the North Shore. (more) (less)

  • Switched-On Bach

Switched-On Bach Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde

  • Experiment in Terror

Experiment in TerrorExperiment in Terror, a stylized noir thriller, was director Blake Edwards's second film in 1962, the first being a devastating portrait of alcoholism, Days of Wine and Roses. Neither film would seem standard fare for a filmmaker best known for his sophisticated slapstick comedies. For Experiment in Terror, Edwards perfected the stylish black-and-white cinematography he used to great effect in the 1950's TV series Peter Gunn. Glenn Ford plays a stalwart G-man out to thwart psychopathic extortionist Ross Martin's plans to force bank clerk Lee Remick to rob the bank where she works. San Francisco locations have never looked better or more ominous. One particularly chilling scene unfolds in the loft of an artisan who makes mannequins for a living ... though not for long. Blake Edwards's experiment in suspense grabs hold of you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the final showdown at Candlestick Park. The film also features a near-legendary score by Henry Mancini. --Kristian St. Clair

  • The 1900 House: An Extraordinary Living Experiment

The 1900 House: An Extraordinary Living Experiment Who hasn't longed for the simplicity of times past, when life was less convoluted, without the complications of cell phones, e-mail, and chauffeuring kids to soccer games? Well, one episode into PBS's reality series The 1900 House will have you rethinking your romanticization of days gone by.

Take one modern 1999 family, insert them into a Victorian London house redesigned to exact 1900 standards, focus a camera on them for three months, and you have The 1900 House. The Bowler family is a typical family of six (actually, seven--the oldest daughter remained in 1999 to take care of the house): 9-year-old Joe is a computer games addict, teenage Kathryn is a club hopper, and preteen twins Hilary and Ruth are still young enough to be the most mature people in the family. Add mother Joyce, a school inspector on hiatus, and father Paul, a Royal Marine who takes his head-of-the-household role a bit too seriously, and you have an immensely likable family living under incredibly strained circumstances.

The first of four episodes focuses on the rebuilding of the house: the removal of the indoor plumbing and electricity, the installation of the coal-burning stove, the planting of the Victorian-era garden, and such. The subsequent three episodes follow the refreshingly fascinating daily life of the Bowler family as they navigate cooking, cleaning, entertaining themselves, and even personal hygiene (Paul learns to cope with a straight-edged razor, and Joyce and Kathryn get a lesson on womanly issues of 1900). Tight editing condenses the three months into four hours, keeping the series fast paced and humorous. Whether you're a reality-TV junkie or have an honest interest in a documentary on Victorian life, The 1900 House will certainly delight. --Jenny Brown
